It’s the time of year to celebrate what membership truly means. But what makes being a member of a co-op different?
The simple answer to that question is that when you are a member of a co-op, you are also an owner. You own a stake in our business, and just like any stakeholder, there are many benefits to your membership.
Members maintain democratic control of our co-op, which means they elect fellow members to represent them on the board of directors every September at our annual meeting.
Electric cooperatives operate at cost. Any excess revenues, called margins, are returned to our members in the form of capital credits. The amount is reflected on their September bill statement.
As a cooperative we have a concern for community. We support the areas in which our members live and work. From sponsorships to our economic development efforts, we stand as a driving force in our community.
We give our members a voice, and we are local—living and working alongside those we serve. That’s the cooperative difference.
