Play It Safe Around Electricity

Kindergarten through 1st Grade

This free presentation is designed for kindergarten through 1st grade. It includes an 11 minute video Play it Safe around Electricity, featuring “Louie the Lightning Bug.” The video is an age appropriate, music filled message on how to avoid electrical accidents.

The presentation opens with a discussion about electricity and the many uses for it. Some electrical terms such as “conductor” and “insulator” are introduced and it is explained why people can be a conductor of electricity. This discussion leads into the video, which shows ways to stay safe around electricity.

Student participation is encouraged by reviewing safety tips provided by Louie in the video. The presentation is concluded with a visit from “Louie the Lightning Bug.” Each student is given a coloring book as an additional learning supplement to reinforce what was learned.

The entire presentation takes 30-45 minutes, but can be tailored to meet your time needs. It can be presented in a classroom, library/media center or in any space where there is access to a TV and VCR. Normally one session can accommodate up to 75 students, depending on space availability and adult supervision.

In addition to a TV and VCR, a room where Louie can await his arrival time is needed.
