Utility Pole Safety

Summer is the time for garage sales, graduations and many outdoor events. Unfortunately, many people publicize these events by posting signs on utility poles. But did you know that attaching signs, posters and recreational equipment to utility poles can create a serious hazard for our line personnel?

Sharp objects like nails, staples and barbed wire all present imminent dangers for our line crews. Our linemen climb poles during all hours of the day and night and in the worst of conditions. If a lineman slips when he is climbing, his fall could become much more severe if he catches a nail or other object tacked onto the pole. Sharp objects not only compound a fall, but also can puncture rubber gloves or other safety equipment, making linemen vulnerable to electrocution.

When the goal is to restore power as quickly and efficiently as possible, taking time to remove objects on the poles only hinders the process.

Safety is Linn County REC’s first concern. We will remove signs without notification and are not responsible for damage to signs.
