Holiday Safety

Remember these safety tips during the holiday season.

  • When putting up outdoor lights or decorations, stay away from overhead power lines.
  • Do not string too many lights together.
  • Never overload your electric outlets.
  • Keep lights and electrical cords away from water.
  • Buy a fresh Christmas tree. If the needles are falling off, the tree is too dry and should not be purchased.
  • Keep your tree away from heat sources, sparks or flames.
  • Check and replace worn, frayed or damaged cords, light sets or wires. Use only UL listed equipment.
  • Never burn wrappings in a fireplace or wood stove.
  • Use only non-combustible decorations.
  • Do not leave Christmas tree lights on unattended.
  • All circuits should be protected by the proper fuse and appropriately matched to the appliances being utilized.
  • Never use candles or open flame devices on the Christmas tree.
  • Unplug cords when you string lights.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Never use indoor lights outside.
  • Check all smoke and CO detectors to make sure they are working properly.
